Four New Authors, Illustrators Announced for Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival’s 3rd Annual Event Oct. 12-14
Edward Hemingway, Brian Lies, W.H. Beck and Liz Garton Scanlon join line up at celebration of books and reading
Sheboygan, Wis. – June 25, 2012 – The Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival announces four more exceptional authors and illustrators for the slate of presenters at this year’s 3rd annual event. Children’s book creators Edward Hemingway, Brian Lies, W.H. Beck and Liz Garton Scanlon join previously announced authors and illustrators Steven Kellogg, Sarah Weeks, Nina Crews, Dan Yaccarino and James Kennedy at this year’s celebration of books and reading that takes place Friday, October 12 through Sunday, October 14 at three Sheboygan venues: the Mead Public Library, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Bookworm Gardens.
The three-day festival features readings, demonstrations, school visits, workshops, illustrator open studio sessions, book signings and more. The theme for this year’s children’s book festival is Family, giving festival goers the opportunity to hear authors and illustrators speak about how family has played a role in their works.
Joining this year’s slate of authors and illustrators are:
- Edward Hemingway, picture book author and illustrator (Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship, Bump in the Night) whose writings and illustrations have appeared in Nickelodeon Magazine, GQ, Gourmet, and The New York Times among others. Mr. Hemingway is the youngest grandson of the author Ernest Hemingway.
- Brian Lies is the author and illustrator of popular and critically-acclaimed picture books (Bats at the Beach, Bats in the Library, More) and he has illustrated books for other authors, including W.H. Beck (Malcolm at Midnight) who will be appearing with Mr. Lies at the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival. Mr. Lies designed the 2012 Summer Library Program Dream Big – READ! poster on display in libraries everywhere.
- W.H. Beck is a Wisconsin author of numerous non-fiction books (Dr. Kate: Angel on Snowshoes, Follow that Food Chain), her newest book is the novel Malcolm at Midnight, the humorous tale of a rat of uncommon valor and merit. Malcolm at Midnight is illustrated by Brian Lies who will be appearing with Ms. Beck at the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival.
- Liz Garton Scanlon, poet and picture book author (All the World, illustrated by Caldecott Honor winner Marla Frazee, A Sock is a Pocket for Your Toes, Think Big) whose works have been called “sumptuous and openhearted” (The New York Times) and “charming, inviting, enticing, heartwarming and simply wonderful” (Children’s Literature).
Previously announced authors and illustrators of acclaimed books for children and teens are Steven Kellogg (The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash, Pinkerton, Behave!), Sarah Weeks (Pie, Crocodile Smile), Nina Crews (The Neighborhood Mother Goose, One Hot Summer Day), Dan Yaccarino (Trashy Town, All the Way to America) and James Kennedy (The Order of Odd Fish.) Kennedy will bring a special screening of his 90-Second Newbery Film Festival to this year’s Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival. More festival authors and illustrators will be announced in the coming weeks.
Authors and illustrators will sign books after their presentations and festival bookseller and sponsor Apple Blossom Books (Oshkosh) will donate a portion of book sale proceeds to benefit the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival.

The Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival is presented by community volunteers and these local organizations who believe in the transformative power of reading and the literary and visual arts: the Mead Public Library, the Eastern Shores Library System, the Sheboygan Area and Kohler school districts, the Kohler Public Library, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, and Bookworm Gardens.
